Were not interested in the software though, were primarily interested in the hardware.
![]() ![]() Ii Emulator Computer Musem Mac Design WasStylistically the G4 iMac design was radical, daring, eye-catching and an evolution of the stance taken with the G3. Apple head honcho Steve Jobs always said that the design was inspired by a sunflower. The original G3 had included many new technologies and ideas, and while the G4 used many of these (as well as others that had crept into the G3 as it evolved and was refined), it also introduced technologies that had been little more than ideas 4 years earlier. This pushed the speed up from the G3s initial 233MHz to an awesome 700MHz (and quicker models would soon appear). USB had been widely adopted throughout the computing world and the G4 stuck with them. It also included (as standard) the newer FireWire technology. This had crept into the G3 in later models but even the most basic G4s came equipped with it. Hard drives sizes had increased and the G4s was 10 times that of the G3s. Similarly the graphics technology had undergone a radical overhaul and the G4s sported a 32Mb nVidia GeForce2 MX. Not only did this speed things up enormously and allow phenomonal displays in 16.7million colours, but it also included a dedicated 3D engine, enhancing game playing performance enormously (provided, of course, that users were playing 3D based games that took advantage of the technology). Ii Emulator Computer Musem Upgrade If TheyOf course users could quite easily upgrade if they felt the need. In other respects the G4 iMac and the G3 iMac were closer as the G4 retained the concept of having everything built in, still shipping with a built in modem (still 56kbps) and built in networking (still 10100mbps), and once again discouraged users from having to delve about inside the machine (in the case of G4 there literally wasnt enough to add anything except an AirPort card anyway). Just as the Mac II evolved into the Mac IIx and then the Mac IIfx and then. Technologies change and improve and every stage of Mac evolution has reflected this - the G4 is no different. On the software side though things had taken something of a quantum leap forward. Ever since the dawn of Mac time, Macs had shipped with Mac OS. Ok so you can see OS X as being an evolution of Mac OS but the fact that for the first time (since the introduction of the Mac) Apple had produced an OS that WASNT backwards compatible was hugely significant (Apple werent stupid enough to not offer backwards compatibility - OS X can run a Classic Mac OS emulator) (and damn useful it is too). OS X may have shipped with some of the later G3 iMacs and the G4 could run OS 9.2.2, but the G4 was always remembered as being an OS X machine. The G4 iMac was my first taste of OS X and while I may not love it as much as Classic Mac OS it is nice to work with.
